Adult onset anxiety is a common problem people aged 30 to 55. It occurs even if life goes well, so the reason we have anxiety seems confusing. Adult onset anxiety makes us forget things, erodes our self-confidence, and makes us moody with sexual partners and children. But what causes it? And, can chiropractic help beat anxiety?
Adult onset anxiety affects both men and women. It is sometimes caused by changing levels of sex hormones. These hormones affect our moods and mental health as well as our physical well-being. As our bodies age, hormones like estrogens and testosterone change. If we are not in the best health, our hormones change until they are not in proper balance. When our sex hormones are out of balance, even the way we see the world changes!
In addition, beginning in our 30s, women and men often get symptoms like insomnia, hot-flashes, and mood swings. So these changes also cause feelings of anxiety.
What about diet and exercise? Our diets, our exercise levels, and our life choices certainly play a role in these hormonal imbalances. However, here’s what many people don’t know: if our connective tissue, muscles and nervous system suffer, people who eat right, exercise, and live well could still suffer from anxiety.
If you start having trouble sleeping, have low self-esteem, and feel dissatisfied with life, if you start to worry a lot and have mood swings that are affecting your relationships, then a psychologist is a good idea. So, in addition, can chiropractic help beat anxiety?
Can Chiropractic Help Beat Anxiety?
Chiropractors detect and correct subtle lesions that interfere with nervous system function. They call these lesions subluxations. Subluxations develop when our bodies cope with stress. They develop in joints and connective tissue, but in particular, they appear along the joints of our spine. Because they appear along the spine, they interfere with our nervous system.
The nervous system is our battery, so it is the prime communicator between the brain and the body. This includes hormonal balance. Subluxations in the spine and connective tissue cause a cascade of events that ultimately interfere with nervous system communication. This breakdown in communication can lead to hormonal imbalance.
Why didn’t you doctor tell you this?
General practitioners help correct big, bold health issues. Subluxations are subtle misalignments; general practitioners aren’t trained to find them. If your medical doctor can’t find a broken bone or a tear in your joints, he or she might not think to send you to a chiropractor.
Chiropractors are trained to find subtle interferences to the nervous system and correct them by hand. If you have trouble with your balance, moving your body from side to side, feel stiff much of the time, and hear a lot of popping and cracking in your joints, then your adult onset anxiety may benefit from chiropractic care.
